Focusing on Words

(experience the wonder of words)

A Special Message to Logophiles (Word Lovers) Who Visit the Word News Blog

Are you curious about words? Are you interested in knowing where they come from and what happened to them in their journeys through the years (decades and even centuries)? If so, then this message is for you.

The Great Rainbow of Languages

As you already know, English is the richest of all the modern languages known to mankind, past or present. It keeps churning out new words by borrowing everything, every where, from everybody, but that isn't the full story.

Once a foreign word is "swallowed, digested", and accepted into everyday speech; it becomes English! The problem is that few of us can keep up with such an explosion of words, much less the thousands which have already come to us from the past.

A Publication for ALL Seasons

The primary objective of this Word News site is to provide content and links for all of those who want to learn more about English vocabulary at any age, including retirees and students (at all levels) and for all of those who have curious minds and a desire to expand their word skills.

-Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.)
Roman statesman, orator and philosopher

When words fail, wars begin. When wars finally end, we settle our disputes with words.

-Wilfred Funk

Employ your time in improving yourself with other men's writings so you shall come easily by what others have labored for.

-Socrates (ancient Athenian philosopher;
teacher of Plato and Xenophon (470-399 B.C.)

Native ability without education is like a tree without fruit.

-Aristippus (c.435-356 B.C.)
